The data provided here were used for analysis in the Geophysical Research Letters publication “Cover crops may cause winter warming in snow-covered regions” by Danica Lombardozzi et al. All data are from uncoupled CLM or CLM-CAM simulations, and were run in one of four cover crop configurations that modified the cropland area during the fallow season over North America in the land surface data set used within each simulation: 1) no cover crop, where crop area has no leaf area during the fallow season; 2) cover crop where leaf area index (LAI) is set to 1 during the fallow season, retaining the default crop height at 50 cm; 3) cover crop where LAI is set to 4 during the fallow season, retaining the default crop height at 50 cm; and 4) cover crop where LAI is set to 4 and the crop height is changed to 10 cm during the fallow season. A detailed description of the simulations can be found within the publication.
Description of the file names:
Coupled CLM-CAM simulations:
· Data from coupled simulations are identified by the file name “cesm2_CAM-CLM_”.
· The different cover crop scenarios (described above) can be identified within the file name as:
o Scenario 1: “NOCoverCrop”
o Scenario 2: “CoverCropLAI1”
o Scenario 3: “CoverCropLAI4”
o Scenario 4: “CoverCropLAI4Height10cm”
· Each file contains monthly-averaged values all 32 years from any given simulation (noted with the file name tag “_yrs1to32”), with two files available for each cover crop scenario. The file name specifies whether the variables are from the CLM or CAM model component:
o Variables from CAM: “CAMvars”
o Variables from CLM: “CLMvars”
Uncoupled CLM simulations:
· Data from uncoupled (CLM-only) simulations are identified by the file name “cesm2_CLM45_”
· The different cover crop scenarios (described above) can be identified within the file name as:
o scenario 1: “NOcovercrop”
o scenario 2: “CovercropLAI1”
o scenario 3: “CovercropLAI4”
o scenario 4: “CoverCropLAI4Height10cm”
· Each file contains monthly-averaged values for all 20 years from any given simulation.
